Danny Giles - Artist Talk
January 22, 2019
5:30-6:30 p.m.
Jacob Lawrence Gallery
Reception to follow
Danny Giles is the 2019 Jacob Lawrence Gallery Resident. He creates performances, installations, and works on paper that interrogate the visual and performative sitings of identity and power. Often appropriating and altering artifacts of visual culture, protest and American history, Giles' practice gives viewers tools to question the material and spatial dimensions of identity and the often violent and coercive tools of its making.
In this public talk hosted by The Black Embodiments Studio, Giles will present recent projects and discuss aspects of his artistic practice and approach to research. Giles' solo show, "The Practice and Science of Drawing a Sharp White Background," runs January 22 to February 28 at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery.
