Each year, the Husky 100 recognizes 100 undergraduate and graduate students from the UW Bothell, Seattle, and Tacoma campuses in all areas of study who are making the most of their time at UW.
Zhehui (Simona) Liao, who is double majoring in Gender, Women & Sexuality Studies and Computer Science, has been recognized as a member of the 2022 cohort of Husky 100. She plans to graduate in Autumn 2022. Congratulations Simona!
Of her Husky experience, she writes, “I take pride in creating interdisciplinary connections between GWSS and CS, and turning those connections into actions that increase diversity and inclusion across communities, from STEM education and outreach in Washington state, to women in STEM mentorship program (Forward with Her) in China, to Minorities in Tech in the Allen School. In the future, I hope to keep expanding the impact by drawing upon all the knowledge, experience, and leadership skills I gained at UW.”
Simona on GWSS 302: Feminist Theories and Methods, a required course for GWSS majors and minors: “Boom! Time to reflect on the knowledge we learn everyday! When you take a look at some science subjects, there is no surprise that most of the mainstream theories are from Western white men. Where does knowledge come from? Whose knowledge is it? Is knowledge always good? Can it be violent? This class helped me learn about feminist epistemology, scrutinize my positionality, and taught me feminist methods to research and produce knowledge.”
