Calling All GWSS Graduates: Tips for a Great Commencement Day

Submitted by Whitney Miller on

Are you planning to graduate this Spring? If so, below you will find important information for the Office of Ceremonies to help you prepare for the 2023 Commencement Ceremony in Husky Stadium, Saturday, June 10.

YOUR STEPS TO A GREAT COMMENCEMENT DAY

  1. Determine Your Eligibility:
  • Bachelor Candidates

Students who earned a degree in Summer 2022, Autumn 2022, or Winter 2023, or have applied to graduate with a departmental advisor for Spring 2023 or Summer 2023 are eligible. Once the application for graduation has been completed and received by the Office of Graduation and Academic Records, the student will then be eligible to complete the Commencement Registration/Order Form.

Honors (undergraduates only): If you qualify for College, Departmental, or Interdisciplinary Honors, please be sure your DARS accurately reflects this status by April 14, 2023. If you have questions, contact the Honors Program (211 Mary Gates Hall, uwhonors@uw.edu, 206-543-7444).  If you are interested in learning about baccalaureate honors, visit the registrar’s Baccalaureate Honor GPA Requirements page.

  • Master’s and Doctoral Candidates

Graduates are eligible to participate if they

  • earned their degrees in Summer 2022, Autumn 2022, or Winter 2023,
  • submitted their master’s degree request or scheduled their final exam (doctoral) with the Graduate School for Spring 2023, or
  • have a reasonable expectation of graduating in Summer 2023. (Summer 2023 graduates only: Those who plan on participating in a graduation event should consult with their graduate program advisor (GPA) to make sure the degree information accurately reflects the degree they plan to earn.)
  1. Get Your Name Listed in the Program:  The Commencement program lists the names of graduates from Summer 2022 through Spring 2023. Summer 2023 graduates’ names will be listed in the following year’s program. If you have not graduated or submitted your application to graduate, you must do the following by April 14th to be included in the program:

Note: You will be receiving information from the Office of the Registrar or the Graduate School via your UW.edu email on the process you need to follow to either 1) select a “Commencement Program Name,” if desired, or 2) request not to be listed in the Commencement Program. If you do not follow this process, your record name on file with the University will be used in the program. Please watch your email for this information and pay attention to any stated deadlines.

3. Come to the Grad Fair: Pose for your official grad portrait (April 5 & 6) and get your photo taken with “Dubs” (April 5, 1:00 – 2:00 pm; 3:00-4:00 pm).  View announcements*, diploma frames* and rings* in person.  Ask the registrar about any final steps you need to complete.  Learn about the ceremony.  Win prizes.
